Join Discovery Day at North Head 10am – 4pm, Sunday 21 January, for a free program of talks, tours, art workshops and exhibitions and lots of kid’s activities. In partnership with Manly Art Gallery & Museum, NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service and Q-station, the Harbour Trust brings you arts, nature, history, ideas and an opportunity to discover or revisit this unique site and celebrate 21 years of North Head as a protected sanctuary.
Discovery Day at North Head sprang from the Manly Art Gallery’s North Head Project – an exhibition of new work by 10 contemporary Australian artists, directly inspired by North Head’s unique cultural heritage, environmental significance, migration and quarantine stories, and military history.
The day will be filled with a variety of interactive activities to suit the whole family, inviting the community to explore and discover the many faces of the beautiful North Head landscape.
Attend talks on the artistic inspiration of North Head, watch artists at work, see exhibitions, or participate in creative workshops from drawing to photography to weaving.
Learn about North Head’s Indigenous history and seasons, or the military heritage of North Head Battery, or take a tour of the North Fort WWII tunnels, Third Quarantine Cemetery, or Q Station.
Meet the North Head Rangers, take a walking tour of North Head’s flora and fauna, or a bushtucker tour to explore traditional bush foods, or listen to talks on North Head’s wildlife and geology.
Kids will be inspired by their surroundings to make art and craft, play games and dress up with the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Kids on Deck pop-up. Glitter tattoos and face painting are part of the fun, and it’s all free.
Parking is available on site, however public transport is recommended, the 135 service from Manly Wharf leaves approximately every half hour. Visithttps://transportnsw.info to plan your trip.
In collaboration with the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, North Head Sanctuary Foundation, Aboriginal Heritage Office, & Manly Environment Centre and at various locations across Manly’s North Head peninsula - including North Head Sanctuary, Q Station & Sydney Harbour National Park – there will be something for everyone to discover.
